Tobit

Chapter 9

Drafted by Grok 4.7 on 8 October 2026. First draft. Not independently reviewed. Aramaic and Hebrew where a Qumran copy can be read (4Q196–4Q200), and otherwise the longer Greek of Codex Sinaiticus. The shorter Greek in Swete is not the base. Gaps in Sinaiticus are not filled from a later edition.

1Then Tobias called Raphael and said to him,
2“Azariah, brother, take four servants and two camels with you, go to Rages, meet Gabael, give him the bond, get the silver, and bring him with you to the wedding.
4You know that my father will be counting the days. If I delay even one day I will grieve him badly. And you see what Raguel swore. I cannot break his oath.”

Sinaiticus has no verse 3 in this chapter. The speech goes from the errand to the reason for haste. Nothing is supplied for the missing number.

5Raphael went, with the four servants and the two camels, to Rages of Media. They stayed with Gabael. He gave him his bond and told him about Tobias son of Tobit, that he had taken a wife and that he was inviting him to the wedding. Gabael got up and counted out the bags for him, seals and all, and they put them together.
6They got up early together and came to the wedding. They entered Raguel’s house and found Tobias reclining. Gabael jumped up, embraced him, wept, and blessed him. He said, “Good and noble son of a good and noble man, just and full of gifts of mercy. May the Lord give you the blessing of heaven, and your wife, and your father, and your wife’s mother. Blessed is God, because I have seen Tobias my cousin, so like him.”

The last “him” is Tobit. The Greek says Gabael has seen Tobias, his cousin, like him. A repeated verb of entering is printed once.
