God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary. spoke to Moses, “Go, go up from here, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘To your seed I will give it.’
I will send a messenger before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite,
to a land oozing milk and honey. I will not go up in your midst, because you are a stiff-necked people, or I might finish you on the way.”
The people heard this bad word, and they mourned, and no one put his ornaments on him.
God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary. said to Moses, “Say to the sons of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I went up in your midst for one moment, I would finish you. Now take your ornaments off, and I will know what I will do with you.’”

- Text
This tent is pitched outside the camp, and Moses names it the tent of meeting. It is not rewritten as the later dwelling in the middle of the camp. The two are left as the text places them.
Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand, each at the entrance of his tent, and watch Moses until he went into the tent.
When Moses went into the tent, the column of cloud would come down and stand at the entrance of the tent, and he would speak with Moses.
All the people would see the column of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, and all the people would rise and bow, each at the entrance of his tent.
God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary. would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his fellow. Then he would return to the camp. His attendant Joshua son of Nun, a young man, would not leave the tent.
Moses said to God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary., “See, you say to me, ‘Bring this people up,’ and you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my eyes.’
Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me know your ways, so that I know you, and so that I find favor in your eyes. And see that this nation is your people.”
He said, “My face will go, and I will give you rest.”
He said to him, “If your face does not go, do not bring us up from here.
How else will it be known that I have found favor in your eyes, I and your people? Is it not by your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the ground?”
God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary. said to Moses, “This thing too that you have spoken, I will do, because you have found favor in my eyes, and I know you by name.”
He said, “Please let me see your glory.”
He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before your face, and I will call the name God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary. before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy.”
He said, “You cannot see my face, because a human shall not see me and live.”
God’s own name. The Hebrew writes YHWH. See the glossary. said, “Look, a place is by me. You shall station yourself on the rock.
When my glory passes, I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my palm until I have passed.
I will take away my palm, and you will see my back, and my face shall not be seen.”
