Chapter 22
Drafted by Grok 4.7 on 8 October 2026. First draft. Not independently reviewed. Leningrad Codex, through the Open Scriptures Westminster Leningrad Codex. The written consonants are printed. A Masoretic reading is footnoted when it differs. No Dead Sea reading was substituted unless it was read from a fragment. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the Greek, Syriac, and Latin versions are witnesses, not the default.
After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham.” He said, “Here I am.”
He said, “Take your son, your only one, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will tell you.”
Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split wood for the burnt offering, got up, and went to the place God had told him.
On the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place from a distance.
Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there. We will worship, and we will return to you.”
Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked together.
Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father.” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
Abraham said, “God will see to the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them walked together.

- Translation
Yireh is “he will see.” “See to” is the sense printed, because the same verb returns in the name of the place. “Provide” is the later English habit, and it is not printed.
They came to the place God had told him. Abraham built the altar there, arranged the wood, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
The messenger of Yahweh called to him from the sky and said, “Abraham, Abraham.” He said, “Here I am.”
He said, “Do not reach out your hand against the boy, and do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only one, from me.”
Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and look, a ram behind him, caught in the thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh sees.” As it is said today, “On the mountain of Yahweh it will be seen.”
The messenger of Yahweh called to Abraham a second time from the sky
and said, “By myself I have sworn, says Yahweh, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only one,
I will bless you greatly, and I will make your offspring very many, like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the shore of the sea. Your offspring will take the gate of their enemies,
and in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you listened to my voice.”
Abraham returned to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beer-sheba. Abraham lived at Beer-sheba.
After these things it was told to Abraham, “Look, Milcah too has borne children to Nahor your brother:
Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
Bethuel fathered Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
