Joseph was brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, an Egyptian man, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.
Yahweh was with Joseph, and he became a successful man. He was in the house of his Egyptian master.
His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made everything he did succeed in his hand.
Joseph found favor in his eyes and attended him, and he put him in charge of his house, and everything he had he put into his hand.
From the time he put him in charge of his house and of all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph. Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.
He left everything he had in Joseph’s hand, and with Joseph there he gave no thought to anything except the food he ate. Joseph was handsome in form and handsome in appearance.
After these things his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.”
He refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here my master gives no thought to what is in the house, and everything he has he has put into my hand.
He is not greater in this house than I am. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
She spoke to Joseph day after day, but he would not listen to her, to lie beside her, to be with her.
One such day he came into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there in the house.
She caught him by his garment and said, “Lie with me.” He left his garment in her hand and fled and went outside.
When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,
she called the men of her house and said to them, “See, he has brought us a Hebrew man to laugh at us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
When he heard me lift my voice and cry out, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.”
She kept his garment beside her until his master came home.
She spoke to him with these words: “The Hebrew servant whom you brought us came in to me to laugh at me.
When I lifted my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”
When his master heard the words his wife spoke to him, “This is what your servant did to me,” his anger burned.
Joseph’s master took him and put him in the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in the prison.

- Text
The written word for the prisoners is asure. The reading tradition says asire. Both mean prisoners. The written consonants are followed, and the sense is the same.
Yahweh was with Joseph and showed him loyalty, and he gave him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
The warden of the prison put into Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it.
The warden of the prison paid no attention to anything in his hand, because Yahweh was with him, and whatever he did, Yahweh made it succeed.
