Chapter 24
Drafted by Grok 4.7 on 8 October 2026. First draft. Not independently reviewed. Leningrad Codex, through the Open Scriptures Westminster Leningrad Codex. The written consonants are printed. A Masoretic reading is footnoted when it differs. No Dead Sea reading was substituted unless it was read from a fragment. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the Greek, Syriac, and Latin versions are witnesses, not the default.
Abraham was old, well along in days, and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in everything.
Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who managed all that he had, “Please put your hand under my thigh,
and I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live,
but you will go to my land and to my kin and take a wife for my son Isaac.”
The servant said to him, “Maybe the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land you came from?”
Abraham said to him, “Watch yourself. Do not take my son back there.
Yahweh, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me and who swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his messenger before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there.
If the woman is not willing to follow you, you will be clear of this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him about this matter.
The servant took ten of his master’s camels and went, with every good thing of his master in his hand. He got up and went to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
He made the camels kneel outside the city by the well of water, at evening, the time when the women who draw water come out.
He said, “Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please make it happen before me today, and do loyalty to my master Abraham.
Look, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.
Let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please tip your jar and let me drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels too,’ she is the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have done loyalty to my master.”
Before he had finished speaking, look, Rebekah was coming out, she who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, and her jar was on her shoulder.
The young woman was very good to look at, a virgin, and no man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up.
The servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me sip a little water from your jar.”
She said, “Drink, my lord,” and she hurried and lowered her jar onto her hand and let him drink.
She finished letting him drink and said, “I will draw for your camels too, until they have finished drinking.”
She hurried and emptied her jar into the trough, ran again to the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.
The man was gazing at her, keeping silent, to know whether Yahweh had made his journey succeed.
When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold nose-ring weighing a half-shekel, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels of gold,
and he said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”
She said to him, “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to spend the night.”
The man knelt and bowed to Yahweh.
He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his loyalty and his faithfulness toward my master. I was on the way, and Yahweh led me to the house of my master’s brothers.”
The young woman ran and told her mother’s household these things.
Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. Laban ran out to the man, to the spring.
As soon as he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “This is what the man said to me,” he came to the man, and look, he was standing by the camels at the spring.
He said, “Come in, blessed of Yahweh. Why are you standing outside? I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.”
The man came into the house, and he unloaded the camels. He gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
He set food before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have spoken my message.” He said, “Speak.”

Leningrad writes “and he set.” The Masoretic reading is “and it was set.” The written consonants are printed, so someone set the food. The passive reading is not printed.
He said, “I am Abraham’s servant.
Yahweh has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, servants and female servants, camels and donkeys.
Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master after she was old, and he has given him everything he has.
My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live.
You shall go to my father’s house and to my clan and take a wife for my son.’
I said to my master, ‘Maybe the woman will not follow me.’
He said to me, ‘Yahweh, before whom I have walked, will send his messenger with you and make your journey succeed, and you will take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father’s house.
Then you will be clear of my oath when you come to my clan. If they do not give her to you, you will be clear of my oath.’
I came today to the spring and said, ‘Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, if you will please make the journey I have come on succeed,
look, I am standing by the spring of water. Let it be that the young woman who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”
and she says to me, “Drink, and I will also draw for your camels,” she is the woman Yahweh has appointed for my master’s son.’
Before I had finished speaking in my heart, look, Rebekah was coming out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’
She hurried and lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels too.’ So I drank, and she watered the camels too.
I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.
I knelt and bowed to Yahweh, and I blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the true way to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son.
Now, if you will do loyalty and faithfulness to my master, tell me. If not, tell me, and I will turn to the right or to the left.”
Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing has come from Yahweh. We cannot speak to you bad or good.
Look, Rebekah is before you. Take her and go, and let her be a wife to your master’s son, as Yahweh has spoken.”
When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed to the ground to Yahweh.
The servant brought out silver articles and gold articles and clothing and gave them to Rebekah. He gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and they spent the night. They got up in the morning, and he said, “Send me off to my master.”
Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman stay with us some days, or ten. After that she may go.”
He said to them, “Do not delay me, since Yahweh has made my journey succeed. Send me off, and I will go to my master.”
They said, “We will call the young woman and ask her own mouth.”
They called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.”
They sent off Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men.
They blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your offspring take the gate of those who hate them.”
Rebekah and her young women got up, rode on the camels, and followed the man. The servant took Rebekah and went.
Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and he was living in the Negev.
Isaac went out to walk about in the field toward evening, and he lifted his eyes and looked, and look, camels were coming.

- Translation
Lasuach is a rare verb. “Walk about” is printed. “Meditate” is the other common guess. The copy does not settle which.
Rebekah lifted her eyes, saw Isaac, and let herself down from the camel.
She said to the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “He is my master.” She took the veil and covered herself.
The servant told Isaac all the things he had done.
Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. Isaac was comforted after his mother.
